American Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) is a herring species endemic to the New World. It inhabits brackish coastal waters, lakes, bays and river estuaries of the Atlantic watershed. The body is short, tall, laterally compressed, usually about 30 cm in length, but some specimens can reach 50 cm. Maximum known weight is 1.56 kg. These schooling fish mostly feed on phyto- and zooplankton but don’t mind eating small crustaceans.
