Bigmouth Buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus) is a warm water fish species from North America. It’s common in Hudson Bay, in the basin of the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. It prefers shallow muddy waters, still and slow-flowing waterways. During hot days, it tends to stay in vegetation near the surface. The body is tall, covered with large scales, with a long dorsal fin. These fish have a record-long life span among freshwater species: Buffalo are known to have lived to be 100 years! Their length varies from 35 to 120 cm, and they can weigh anything from 1.5 to 40 kg. Buffalo feed on zooplankton and small invertebrates.
