They can be distinguished by large scales, bulging snout and many tiny barbels on the lower jaw. The body is broad with a small hunch. Their name is descriptive of the characteristic sounds they can make. The weight of these fish can reach 50 kg, and their length often exceeds 1.5 m. Black Drum are long-living fish, with known specimens of about 40 years! They prefer to feed on molluscs, crustaceans and oysters.
