The Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) is a species of freshwater fish native to North America. It lives in streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds. It usually hides in cover among water plants and around underwater structures. Bluegills typically grow up to 10-30 cm (4-12 in) long and weigh around 0.5-2 kg (1-4 lbs). They are easily distinguished by the blue-purple coloring on the face and gill flap, dark-olive bands down the sides and a yellow-orange belly. The fish are omnivores and mostly feed on aquatic insects and fish.
