Burbot (Lota lota) is the only freshwater fish from the cod family. These fish are most common in streams and lakes of North America, particularly in the Great Lakes and Alaska region. Burbot prefer to live in large cold rivers and lakes, primarily in freshwater habitats. These fish have elongated serpent-like bodies with a flattened head and overall look like a cross between a catfish and an eel. The average length of adult Burbot is about 40 cm (16 in), while the weight can range from 1 to 8 kg (2.2 to 17 lb). Burbot are hunters, that are active primarily during twilight and prey primarily on other fish, like young northern pike, trout and perch. Sometimes they may feed on frogs, snakes, birds and insects.
