Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) is a species of fish in the Salmon family, one of the several species of Pacific salmon. While these fish were introduced in the Great Lakes and many other North American waterways, Coho Salmon’s natural habitat runs along both sides of the North Pacific Ocean, from Japan and eastern Russia, around the Bering Sea to mainland Alaska, and south to Monterey Bay, California. Coho Salmon are anadromous fish, meaning they migrate from the sea up into freshwater to spawn. In their spawning phase after entering freshwater, Coho Salmon develop bright-red sides with bluish-green heads and backs and strongly hooked snouts with large teeth. Mature adults usually weigh from 3.2 to 5 kg, but sometimes huge specimen of over 12 kg can be caught. The diet of Coho Salmon includes aquatic insects, plankton, salmon eggs and smaller fish.
