Dogtooth Tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor) is a large pelagic fish of the Gymnosard genus. It got its name because of the external resemblance to tuna, although it isn’t one. It inhabits depths of 10 to 300 meters in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Dogtooth Tuna prefers to hide near reefs, underwater rocks and steep cliffs. It can reach up to 2.5 meters in length and up to 130 kilograms in weight. This fish is an apex predator that competes for food with other fish, even sharks and groupers. It hunts alone or in small groups. The basis of the diet is small schooling fish and squid. During the fight, it resists very strongly and attempts sharp throws to the depth, where it can rub the fishing line against bottom objects.
