Electric Eel (Electrophorus electricus) is a ray-finned fish that is similar to real eels only insofar as its appearance and name are concerned. It inhabits the rivers of South America, in particular the Amazon tributaries. Its skin is slippery, scaleless, brown; its small eyes are emerald green; there is a vivid orange collar under its jaw. IIts tail and abdominal fins are hardly developed, while its anal fin is powerful and effective. It usually reaches 2 m in length and 15 kg in weight. This mini power station mainly feeds on small fish. As you can figure from its name, this eel can generate a strong electrical charge. This helps it to not only attack its future prey but also successfully navigate its way in muddy waters. Thanks to an organ called the Weberian apparatus electric eels also have excellent hearing: you will have to try hard if you want to sneak up to this fish.
