Leather Carp (Cyprinus Nudus) is an artificially bred variety of Common Carp -extremely popular freshwater gamefish in many parts of Europe. Like other Carp, this species prefers large bodies of slow or standing water and soft, vegetative sediments. As carp are schooling fish, they usually stay in groups of five or more. Leather Carp can be identified by their lack of scales and almost leather-like skin. These fish on average grow to about 40-80 cm and 2-14 kg. But the largest Leather Carp caught in the UK weighed in at over 24 kg and was nicknamed ‘Heather the Leather’. Just like for any other Carp, best bait for Leather Carp is semolina balls, dough balls, corn and peas.
