Ripsaw Catfish (Oxydoras niger) is a species of thorny catfish native to the Amazon and Essequibo basins. It has a characteristically large head with an oblong snout and tiny eyes. Its body is bulky, with lateral thorns to protect itself from predators, and its dorsal fin is broad and tall. The back and fins are black, while the sides and belly have dark brown coloration. These fish can grow to a length of 1 m and a weight of 13 kg. Ripsaw Catfish are omnivorous carrion eaters willing to consume any organic matter from the water bottom, be it larvae, fragments of meat, dead fish, crustaceans or delicious plants. They feed by sifting through the water bottom with their barbel receptors.
