Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka), is one of the smaller species of Salmon inhabiting the Northern Pacific Ocean and rivers that flow into it. This fish prefers to live in freshwater lakes, estuaries and streams and is also known as Red or Blueback Salmon. This is due to the fact that it has a blueish-silver body when it lives in the ocean, but turns red in hue when returns to its freshwater spawning grounds. Sockeye can grow to anywhere from 60-84 cm in length and weigh from 2.3 to 7 kg. Their diet consists primarily of zooplankton, small crustaceans and small fish.
